DoLS Legal Aid
The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) ensure that individuals with impaired mental capacity, who live in a care home, hospital or supported living environment are protected from receiving any treatment which would not be considered to be of benefit and/or within their best interests. These safeguards guarantee appropriate decision making is made on behalf of those people when they sometimes cannot make decisions for themselves.
Legal Aid is available to anyone subject to a DoLS Authorisation, regardless of financial means and these proceedings can often be time consuming and complex. I have been working in legal costs since 2004 and I am passionate about ensuring legal aid is accessible to those in need. In my current role, I specialize in Legal Aid billing for Court of Protection and mental health cases, which are instrumental in representing some of the most vulnerable members of our society. I strongly believe achieving the best possible costs recovery is critical to upholding Legal Aid services across the country. This gives me a sense that I am making a positive contribution to our society and bringing justice closer to those in need. Apart from legal costing, I'm also passionate about literature, cricket, football, running and spending time outdoors in the North Wales countryside. Overall, legal costing continues to provide an interesting and fulfilling career for me.
Karen Gluyes
With thirty-five years of experience in Legal Aid billing and Inter Partes costs, my current role as a Costs Draftsman is highly engaging. I have extensive experience in drafting Replies Points of Dispute and Negotiations, handling Case Plans and Events Case Plans, managing LAA costs, and successfully dealing with multiple High Court cases and CCMS. The variety this career presents ensures that I remain interested in each new project that arises. Additionally, responding quickly to requests for information regarding High Court cases further increases the level of challenge I encounter daily. Outside of my career, I love to keep busy with activities like reading, dancing, walking, and spending time with my beloved children and my cheeky yorkie-poo Teddy.
Sophie Weir
With more than eight years of experience in the legal costs sector, I have been exposed to a diverse set of cost domains, which vary from professional negligence to family, tax, and commercial litigation. I particularly pride myself in successfully pursuing complex Costs Budgets for high-cost claims as well as preparing Bills of Costs for Detailed Assessments. Presently, a considerable amount of my work revolves around Legal Aid billing in mental health and Court of Protection matters. My advantage is that I am proactive and tenacious in achieving satisfying outcomes for clients. When not at work, I make sure that I enjoy quality time with my friends and family. Baking is one of my favourite hobbies, and I always receive compliments for my delicious coconut cake! Although I have yet to visit all the seven wonders of the world, I am passionate when it comes to travelling and Vietnam remains my top destination thus far.
